Sir Henry de Merland - Knight of Edward I

Henry de Merland of Orchardleigh: Summoned to serve against the Welsh, he acknowledges half a Knight's Fee in Hortherl, and will serve in person, 1 July 1277. Makes fine for half a Fee 1282. Having £20 lands in Somerset and Dorset, summoned to serve overseas 7 July 1297, and having £40 lands there, to serve against the Scots 24 June 1300 (Parliamentary Writs).

 

Pardon to him and his wife Joan, daughter and heiress of Thos. Braunche, for acquiring without licence from William Braunche a messuage and lands in Frome Manor, 2 May 1313 (Patent Rolls).

 

A lord of Orchardley, Somerset, 5 Mar. 1316 (Parliamentary Writs). Dead by 15 September 1318 (Fine Rolls), holding Horcherdelegh Manor and advowson (Inquisitiones). Livery to his son and heir Henry and dower to his widow Alice 6 November 1318. Pardon on 5 marks fine to John le Fleming for marrying said Alice without licence 19 July. 1324 (Fine Rolls).

 

Qualified for Knighthood. His son Henry, holding 1 Knight's Fee or £40 lands, was summoned for not taking up Knighthood, 12 May 1326 (Parliamentary Writs), and was dead by 7 June 1346, leaving a son and heir Henry, aged 30 (Inquisitiones).
