Henry Merland was called 16 Dec 1477 to the Parliament of 1477-78, for the Borough of Guildford, along with Thomas Stoughton. (House of Commons, 1878, part 1 1213-1702) This is probably the Henry Merland who acquired the Manors of Preston and Westbergh in Banstead, Surrey, in 1461; he died around 1482. (Manning and Bray, History and Antiquities of the County of Surrey, 1809).

Paul Marland, of Temple Guiting, Gloucestershire, was Conservative M.P. for Gloucester West, 1979-97, during which time he was Joint Parliamentary Private Secretary to two successive ministries, and then Chairman of the Back Bench Agricultural Committee and latterly President of the National Conservative Convention (Who's Who, 2007).
