Henry Merland was called 16 Dec 1477 to the Parliament of 1477-78, for the Borough of Guildford, along with Thomas Stoughton. (House of Commons, 1878, part 1 1213-1702)

This is probably the Henry Merland who acquired the Manors of Preston and Westbergh in Banstead, Surrey, in 1461; he died around 1482. (Manning and Bray, History and Antiquities of the County of Surrey, 1809).

  Jonathan Peter Marland was created Baron Marland of Odstock in the County of Wiltshire in 2006, while Treasurer of the Conservative Party, a post which he held until February 2007. He has been Chairman or Trustee of a number of charities and director or non-executive director of a number of companies, and was co-founder of Jardine Lloyd Thompson, an offshoot of the legendary Hong Kong house of Jardine. Recently he was reported as a partner in a bid for Orient Express Hotels. (Who's Who, 2007; The Times 13 August 2007; Dods).

Paul Marland, of Temple Guiting, Gloucestershire, was Conservative M.P. for Gloucester West, 1979-97, during which time he was Joint Parliamentary Private Secretary to two successive ministries, and then Chairman of the Back Bench Agricultural Committee and latterly President of the National Conservative Convention (Who's Who, 2007).
